26875430512_3304420a7d_zThe second 5 Peaks race took place at Golden Ears Park with sport, enduro, kids 1km and kids 3km courses. Golden Ears is a remarkable venue for a race, that really becomes an all day event.

I ran the enduro, a challenging 13km with 550 meters of elevation gain over two climbs. In between the climbs there were naturally two technical and quick descents with the rest of the course covering smooth, wide trails with a notorious log jump (as seen above). Half of the enduro covers the sport course, making for a fun busy trail and other races to help push you through to the finish.

We were spoiled at the finish line with delicious crepes from DeDutch and Ice Cream from the RunGo App tent!

This year the Golden Ears race took place on Mothers day, so there were tons of fun games and give-aways after. My mom and I participated in the piggy-back race and took the win! Then we watched the second event where mother-daughter pairs were sent to retrieve anything they could from friendly picnickers by the lake. Items people brought back included chips, bread, and one daughter managed to be given a bbq chicken skewer!

Races are about so much more than the finish. Golden Ears captured that perfectly, with hundreds of racers who stuck around to play, picnic, and mingle after the race.

I finished first in my age, qualifying for the Canadian Trail Running Championships at the end of June. Time to start hill is a grueling 6km up 1100m of elevation, but I can’t wait!

The true winner of the day was this pup, who was a total natural on top of the podium.
